Surfers and long waves in Weligama bay on Sri Lanka's south coast

Why go

Weligama in brief

Weligama means 'coconut village', and the town spreads around a broad bay with a long, gentle break that has made it the standard place in Sri Lanka to take a first surf lesson. Board rental and instructors line the sand.

It sits close enough to Mirissa for a shared day out but feels calmer: more local life, a working fish market, stilt fishermen at the eastern end and cafés that cater to long-stay surfers.

For travellers it works well as a quieter alternative to Mirissa, particularly for families and anyone who wants a beach week with fewer late nights.

What to do

Highlights in and around Weligama

Surf lessons and board hire

The bay's long, rolling whitewater is forgiving for beginners; instructors and boards are available on the sand for a few hours or a full day.

Stilt fishermen

The traditional fishing stilts at the eastern end of the bay are most photogenic in the early morning.

Weligama fish market

A working market near the harbour where the morning catch is landed and sold — an honest look at the town's actual livelihood.

Midigama reef breaks

A few kilometres east, a series of reef breaks for surfers who have outgrown the bay's beginner waves.

Taprobane Island

A small private island just off the coast, reachable at low tide — dramatic to photograph from the headland.

Ahangama cafés and turtle beaches

A short drive west along the coast for coffee stops, beach clubs and turtle nesting sites.

Practical notes

Useful before you arrive

Suggested stay: 2–4 nights; longer if surfing is the point of the trip..

  • Lessons are best in the morning before the onshore wind builds.
  • Reef shoes are worth packing — the bay has rocky patches at low tide.
  • Weligama is flatter and hotter than the hills: sun protection matters.
  • It is a good final stop before a Colombo Airport departure, about 2.5–3 hours away.

FAQ

Weligama questions

Weligama or Mirissa — which is better?

Weligama for surfing, families and a calmer week; Mirissa for the postcard bay, whale watching and a livelier evening. Many guests visit both in one stay.

Can we learn to surf in Weligama as a beginner?

Yes — it is the most common beginner beach on the south coast because of the long, slow waves. Lessons and boards are hired directly on the sand.

Is Weligama close to the airport?

Roughly two and a half to three hours by private car, which makes it one of the easier beaches for a departure-day transfer.
