Galle Fort lighthouse and ramparts on the southern coast of Sri Lanka

Why go

Galle in brief

Galle Fort is a walled town built by the Dutch in the 17th century on a headland at the edge of the southern coast. Inside the ramparts: narrow lanes, converted merchant houses, boutiques, cafés and a lighthouse, all within a walkable perimeter of about a kilometre.

It is Sri Lanka's most polished base for a coastal stay — good restaurants, galleries and shops, with Unawatuna, Koggala and Mirissa within easy reach by car.

For many travellers Galle is also a natural waypoint: the road from Colombo Airport runs down the expressway, and the fort makes an excellent first or last stop on a southern itinerary.

What to do

Highlights in and around Galle

Rampart walk at sunset

The fort walls are public and the light in the last hour is the reason to be here. Expect locals, families and a good atmosphere.

Dutch Reformed Church and museum

One of the oldest Protestant churches still in use in the country, with a small collection of Dutch-era records and maps.

Lighthouse and square

The lighthouse marks the seaward corner of the fort and is the standard orientation point for any walk.

Lanes, galleries and boutiques

Small design shops, jewellery studios and cafés fill the inner lanes — pleasant browsing when the midday heat keeps you out of the sun.

Unawatuna and Jungle Beach

A short drive from the fort for swimming, snorkelling and a change from the town.

Sea turtle hatcheries

Several operate on the coast west of town. Practices vary, so choose ones that release hatchlings rather than holding them.

Practical notes

Useful before you arrive

Suggested stay: 2 nights works well; 3 if you want beach days mixed with town..

  • Rampart walls are uneven and exposed: take water and sun protection for the sunset walk.
  • Restaurant tables in the fort fill up in season — reserve for Friday and Saturday nights.
  • The fort gets hot and flat by midday; plan indoor sights for that window.
  • Beach clubs outside the walls run shuttles, but a car is easier with a group.

FAQ

Galle questions

Is Galle Fort worth visiting?

Yes — it is one of the few colonial towns in Asia you can walk through end to end in an afternoon, and it has genuinely good food and shops rather than just souvenir stalls.

How long should I stay in Galle?

Two nights lets you see the fort in daylight and at sunset and still take a beach day. One night works if you only want the fort itself.

How far is Galle from the airport?

About two to two and a half hours by private car on the expressway, which makes it the simplest beach stop to reach on arrival day.
