Why go

Colombo in brief

Colombo is where most travellers first touch the island, even when they head elsewhere immediately. The airport sits north of the city at Katunayake, about 45 minutes to an hour away without traffic.

The city rewards a short stop rather than a long one: the colonial grid around Fort and Pettah, Gangaramaya Temple, the Galle Face Green promenade at sunset, and a restaurant scene that has improved a great deal in recent years.

Used well, Colombo is a comfortable landing pad — a night to recover from a long flight, a proper meal, then inland the next morning. Used badly, it is a traffic jam between you and your holiday.

What to do

Highlights in and around Colombo

Galle Face Green

The seafront promenade, busiest at sunset when kite sellers, food stalls and families fill the strip.

Pettah market district

A dense grid of streets each trading in one thing — textiles, electronics, spices. Noisy, fascinating and best visited in the morning.

Gangaramaya Temple

An eclectic Buddhist temple beside Beira Lake with a museum of gifts, statues and objects donated over a century.

The Fort colonial quarters

Colombo's best colonial architecture, now mostly banks, offices and hotels, arranged on a walkable grid.

National Museum and Viharamahadevi Park

A useful indoor pair in the Cinnamon Gardens district, ten minutes from each other when it rains.

Independence Memorial Hall

A quieter civic square inland, close to craft shops and the university grounds.

Practical notes

Useful before you arrive

Suggested stay: 1 night on arrival or departure; 2 if you want to explore properly..

  • Traffic peaks roughly 7–10am and 4–8pm; allow extra time for airport runs.
  • Dress codes apply at temples, including Gangaramaya.
  • Swimming at Galle Face is not advised — the water is polluted; head south for a beach.
  • If you have a morning flight, staying near the airport the night before removes the risk entirely.

FAQ

Colombo questions

Should I stay in Colombo on arrival?

If you land in the afternoon or evening, yes — a night in Colombo or Negombo beats a long night drive. If you land early, most guests prefer to head straight inland.

How far is Colombo Airport from the city?

About 45 minutes to an hour without traffic. In peak hours it can take considerably longer, which is why we build buffer time into departure transfers.

Is Colombo worth exploring?

For a day, yes — the markets, temples and food are genuinely interesting. It is a working capital rather than a sightseeing city, so keep expectations realistic.
