Southern Province · beach town
A curved bay on the south coast for swimming, whale watching and slow afternoons — a classic end to a hill-country itinerary.

Why go
Mirissa is a small bay town a few kilometres east of Matara, built around one crescent of sand backed by palms. It is compact: a handful of cafés, a busy evening street, boat piers and the famous Coconut Tree Hill above the bay.
It is the most common beach finish to a private tour, because the road from the mountains drops you here in a single day. Many guests arrive from Ella or Yala, sleep two or three nights and either fly home or continue west to Galle.
Whale watching runs mainly from December to April, with boats leaving before sunrise. Outside that season the bay is simply a good place to swim, read and eat fresh fish.
What to do
The main bay, sheltered and good for swimming in the morning before the wind picks up. Loungers and small restaurants line the sand.
Boats run early in the season to see blue whales and dolphins offshore. Sea conditions vary — choose operators that keep distance from the animals.
A short walk to a grassy headland of palms above the sea. Go at sunrise for the light and fewer people.
Smaller coves on either side of the main bay that reward a walk or a short tuk-tuk ride.
Stalls along the beach road serve grilled fish, rice and curries at local prices — the easiest good dinner in town.
Short trips run to nearby bays and reef, useful on days when the sea is too rough for an open-ocean run.
Practical notes
Suggested stay: 2–3 nights; 4 if you want rest days between longer driving legs..

FAQ
The main season runs roughly December to April. Outside those months boats run less often and sightings are less reliable, so we suggest planning a beach stay instead.
The sheltered bay is fine for swimming and the town is small enough to walk. For a quieter base with more space, Weligama just along the coast often suits families better.
A private car is the practical answer: around three and a half to four and a half hours with stops, door to door, with your luggage in the car rather than on a bus.
