Grouping the island

Most trips combine two or three regions. These groupings make it easier to see what sits close together.

Uva Province

  • Ella2–3 nights suits most itineraries; 4 if you want day trips and rest days.

Central Province

  • Kandy1–2 nights for most travellers; 3 if you want day trips to the Cultural Triangle.
  • Nuwara Eliya1–2 nights; it is most often used as a stop between Kandy and Ella.

North Central Province

  • Sigiriya1–2 nights; 2 if you want Polonnaruwa and a safari as well as the climb.

Southern Province

  • Yala1–2 nights; one night with two drives is the standard plan.
  • Galle2 nights works well; 3 if you want beach days mixed with town.
  • Mirissa2–3 nights; 4 if you want rest days between longer driving legs.
  • Weligama2–4 nights; longer if surfing is the point of the trip.

Southern / Sabaragamuwa border

  • Udawalawe1 night is usually enough for an afternoon and a morning drive.

Western Province

  • Colombo1 night on arrival or departure; 2 if you want to explore properly.
