Central Province · tea country
Sri Lanka's tea heartland at about 1,900 m — cool, green and often misty, with colonial-era architecture and endless estates.

Why go
Nuwara Eliya is the highest large town in Sri Lanka and the centre of the country's tea industry. The climate is genuinely cool: jackets in the morning, rain that arrives without warning, and a town that looks more English than tropical with its red post office, golf course and country houses.
This is where Ceylon tea is grown, processed and sold, and the surrounding estates are the reason most people stop. Factory visits, estate walks and a cup at the source are the standard visit — and they are better here than anywhere else on the island.
It also sits on the rail line to Ella, so many guests ride one section of the famous hill-country railway while their car handles the rest.
What to do
Working factories around town welcome visitors for a walk through the process, finishing with a tasting of different grades.
A flat, walkable lake in the middle of town with paddle boats and a morning promenade. Good for a gentle hour between driving days.
A cool-climate garden on the road to Ella, with rose beds, ferns and a spice section at altitude.
A plateau above town reached by jeep, with wide views and, in season, a chance of seeing sambar deer at dawn.
Devon and St Clair's falls sit on the road toward the lowlands, and Ramboda Falls on the climb up from Kandy.
The red post office, the golf course and the old club buildings give the town its 'Little England' character — pleasant to wander for an hour.
