The journey

Ella to Arugam Bay

Rather than returning west, this route runs east and north-east through the dry zone toward Pottuvil. The road is generally quiet and passes through small towns, forest patches and paddy land — a different Sri Lanka from the hill country you leave behind. It is a full but straightforward driving day, and having the car private means the surf check at the end of it is not rushed.

This route runs in both directions. Travelling the other way — Arugam Bay to Ella — uses the same vehicle options and the same pricing approach.

Along the way

Typical stops on this drive

  • Passara and the tea-country edge as you leave Ella
  • Moneragala for a break and supplies
  • The turn toward Pottuvil and the final coastal approach

Optional stops

Moneragala is the natural halfway stop for food and fuel. If you are travelling in surf season, we can time the arrival for an evening session rather than the heat of the afternoon.

Good to know

Before you book this transfer

  • The east coast has a different season from the south — surf is best roughly April to October, when the south coast is wetter.
  • This route is long enough that an early start matters; departing around 8am usually gets you there with daylight to spare.
  • Because it is a cross-island day, we do not recommend combining it with a morning hike and a late lunch stop as well.
  • Returning the same way takes a similar time, so plan it as a driving day in either direction.

Best for

  • Surfers continuing to the east coast
  • Travellers who have already seen the south
  • Guests who prefer a direct road to a long backtrack

FAQ

Questions about this transfer

How long does Ella to Arugam Bay take?

Approximately four to five hours with a rest stop. The roads are good but the day is long, so we recommend leaving in the morning rather than after a full day of sightseeing.

Is it worth stopping at Yala on the way?

You pass reasonably close to the southern national park area, and some guests do combine them. It adds distance, so we would treat it as a two-day route rather than a single transfer.

Do you carry surfboards?

Yes, as long as we know in advance. Board racks and roof space depend on the vehicle, so send us your board count with the enquiry and we will confirm what fits.
