Southern / Sabaragamuwa border · national park
Udawalawe
An open grassland park built around a large reservoir — Sri Lanka's most dependable place to see wild elephants.
Hill-country town, Uva Province → National park, southern dry zone
A private transfer from Ella to the edge of Udawalawe National Park, the calmer alternative to Yala for elephants and open grassland.
The journey
The drive drops out of the hills and across rolling dry-country farmland to the park boundary. It is one of the shorter transfers from Ella, which makes it a good fit if you want a safari afternoon without losing a whole day on the road. The landscape changes noticeably on the way down: tea gives way to scrub, tank beds and elephant country.
This route runs in both directions. Travelling the other way — Udawalawe to Ella — uses the same vehicle options and the same pricing approach.
Along the way
Most guests stop once on the way down. If you are interested in the Elephant Transit Home feeding time, tell us the date — it is a fixed schedule and worth planning the arrival around.
