Sri Lanka 7-Day Private Tour Itinerary

A realistic week in Sri Lanka with a private car and chauffeur: day by day, with driving times, what to skip and where people usually make it too tight.

The route at a glance

Colombo Airport → Sigiriya → Kandy → Nuwara Eliya → Ella → Yala → departure. Seven days, six nights, moving from the ancient cities through the hills and finishing in wildlife country.

It covers the three things first-time visitors most want — history, tea country and animals — without turning every day into a marathon.

Day by day

  • Day 1: land, meet your chauffeur, drive inland with a stop at Dambulla. Overnight near Sigiriya.
  • Day 2: climb Sigiriya early; afternoon at Polonnaruwa or an evening safari at Minneriya.
  • Day 3: drive to Kandy through spice country; temple and lake in the evening.
  • Day 4: climb into tea country — waterfalls, a tea factory, overnight in Nuwara Eliya.
  • Day 5: estates and Haputale on the way down to Ella; bridge and viewpoints late afternoon.
  • Day 6: a slower morning in Ella, then past Ravana Falls to your stay beside Yala.
  • Day 7: dawn game drive, then onward — Colombo Airport or the south coast.

Driving times you should plan around

Airport to Sigiriya is the longest leg at roughly three and a half to four and a half hours with Dambulla. Kandy to Nuwara Eliya and Nuwara Eliya to Ella are each around two to two and a half hours with stops. Ella to Yala is two and a half to three.

Nothing else on this route is long — which is why the plan holds together even when it rains.

What to book before you fly

  • Six nights of accommodation in the order above
  • Sigiriya tickets can be bought on site, but check the opening hours in your season
  • A safari jeep if you want a specific dawn slot in Yala
  • Your final flight — day 7 works backwards from it

Where this itinerary gets too tight

Adding the south coast to day 7 while catching an evening flight is possible but unforgiving: one accident on the expressway and you are cutting it fine. If your flight is before 8pm, we usually suggest leaving the coast earlier that morning.

The other common squeeze is trying to see both Minneriya and Yala on one trip. They are different parks, but in seven days one well-chosen safari is better than two rushed ones.

What is usually included

In a private tour like this, the car, the chauffeur, fuel, tolls and all the driving are covered, along with route planning. Hotels, meals, entrance tickets, train seats and the safari jeep are separate — you book and pay those directly.

That separation is deliberate: it keeps the transport price clear and lets you choose your own standard of accommodation.

How to make it yours

Swapping Kandy for more time in Ella, or the Cultural Triangle for the east coast in surf season, is easy when the vehicle is private. The itinerary above is a starting structure, not a package you have to buy intact.
